Molton in black is versatile and can be used on stage, in the theatre, in the event sector or at trade fairs. The lightweight decorative molton, weighing only 160 g/m², is used for decorations. The heavy stage molton (300g/m²), on the other hand, is used as a stage curtain, backdrop, photo background, etc. The fabric is made of 100% cotton, is flame retardant and certified according to DIN 4102 B1. and also complies with classification C-s1, d0 according to EN 13501-1. Molton is available as a whole bale with a choice of 30 or 60 running metres and by the metre (each 300 cm wide) or ready-made with webbing, Velcro tape, eyelets, etc.

Molton fabric black made from 100% cotton – special properties

Whether stage or decorative molton, both fabrics are made of 100% cotton and are:

Molton black B1 flame retardant according to DIN 4102 and C-s1, d0 according to EN 13501-1

Molton from allbuyone is impregnated to be flame retardant and therefore meets the high fire safety requirements of many authorities. Molton is certified as flame retardant according to DIN 4102 B1 ( ) and complies with EN 13773 ( ) – a standard specifically for curtains and drapes. The fabric also complies with classification C-s1, d0 according to DIN EN 13501-1.

Note: Washing, ironing, heavy mechanical stress and damp storage can impair the flame retardant impregnation and cause the flame retardancy to be lost.

Decorative molton or stage molton black – what is the difference between the fabrics?

Decorative molton and stage molton have some similarities, but also significant differences.

Stage molton black 300g / m

Stage molton is a technical fabric, a heavy cotton fabric manufactured in a twill weave with a weight of 300 g/m². This results in a very fine fabric that is opaque and opaque. Black stage molton in particular is almost light-proof and achieves a blackout factor of up to 95%.

Thanks to its properties, stage molton is a popular technical fabric in event technology and stage construction. Whether by the metre, in whole bales or ready-made, the applications are diverse.

Here are the most important properties of stage molton, combined with its uses:

Stage molton improves room acoustics

The heavy weight of 300 g/m² in combination with the roughened surface gives stage molton sound-absorbing properties, which is why the fabric can also be made into acoustic curtains. Stage molton is used in large rooms for sound absorption, for example to cover walls or as ceiling hanging fabric. As a so-called "porous absorber", stage molton is sound-absorbing and capable of improving sound quality. The fabric is particularly effective in the mid and high frequencies, where it reliably absorbs background noise and thus has a positive effect on room acoustics. Important: Molton has no effect on bass frequencies.

Stage molton for curtains

(Stage) curtains are often made of black stage molton. Tip: The higher the fabric consumption, the better its technical capabilities. If you want to cover small areas, the absorption area can be increased by creating elaborate folds.

Stage molton black 300g for darkening

Stage molton black has a blackout rating of 95% and is ideal as a blackout curtain for museums, conference rooms, cinemas, film and photo studios, etc.

The darkening of rooms with black molton depends on several factors: the density of the fabric and the colour itself. The intensity of the lighting also plays an important role. The darker the colour, the better areas/rooms can be darkened. The lighter the colour, the more light-permeable the fabric is. No fabric can achieve 100% blackout ("blockout"). Instead, you should use a special foil or a combination of foils and molton.

Stage molton as a photo background and backdrop

The rough, light-absorbing surface enables reflection-free film and photo shoots. When used as a stage backdrop, the fabric absorbs flash lights and stage spotlights.

Decorative molton black 160g / m

Decorative molton with 160 g/m² is woven from cotton with a canvas weave. This results in a lightweight decorative fabric that is easy to work with. Like all other colours, decorative molton black is not light-proof and only slightly sound-absorbing. In addition, the fabric is not completely opaque.

Decorative molton black for decoration and effective lighting

Decorative fabrics are rarely flame retardant, but decorative molton is. Its light weight and impressive width of 300 cm allow for large-scale, time-saving designs. The decorative fabric is often used to decorate trusses, as wall coverings or for frame tensioning. The translucent material also allows for fascinating effects and light installations. The rough, matt surface is often used for various reflection-free backgrounds.

Black molton – the insider tip for production

Black molton is also used for a special purpose, particularly in the event sector. The black colour harmonises with stage floors, technology and other elements. Opaque molton is therefore used to cover equipment and stage props, ensuring a harmonious backdrop. At events that are not sold out , the unoccupied seats are covered with molton black. This means that the empty seats are not visible to either the artist or the audience.
