Stage molton is made of 100% cotton, the fabric is flame retardant B1 according to DIN 4102 and classified according to DIN EN 13501-1. Molton is roughened on both sides and is opaque. The fabric, in combination with its weight (300 g/m²), gives the molton fabric a high degree of light and sound absorption. Stage molton absorbs reverberation, improves acoustics and can be used to reliably darken rooms. The matt surface does not reflect light. Stage molton is opaque and, in black, almost light-proof.
You can buy stage molton rolls here in 3 m x 60 m sizes with fast shipping. In our range, you will find stage molton as a whole roll in other colours with a length of 30 running metres or by the metre, as a ready-made stage curtain or customised in our molton configurator. The opaque, flame-retardant stage molton in classic black and white is suitable for curtains, as a stage covering or stage covering in theatres and for stages at (open air) concerts and events.
But the stage molton roll (300 g/m²) offers even more technical properties that are particularly interesting for photography and events: molton fabrics absorb light and sound, they are opaque and suitable for darkening. Molton is used for darkening in studios or as a matt background material for professional photography. However, stage molton can also be customised as sound-absorbing wall covering, ceiling hanging fabric or for acoustic curtains.
Like all our Molton fabrics, the stage molton roll B1 is certified as being flame retardant according to DIN 4102 and classified as C-s1, d0 according to DIN EN 13501, in accordance with the legal requirements for fire protection.
Incidentally, as a lightweight alternative to stage molton – for decorative purposes, as a lightweight curtain, etc. – you will find decorative molton in our shop in a range of different designs.

for public events, theatres and more: Molton from allbuyone is flame retardant. Stage molton and decorative molton are certified according to DIN 4102 B1 and classified according to DIN EN 13501-1 Cs1 (EN 13773). We will send you a corresponding certificate on request.
Yes, stage molton is sound-absorbing. The dense, rough fabric has a high absorption coefficient due to the combination of high weight (300 g/m²) and roughening. It is therefore often used for sound insulation and soundproofing and thus to improve acoustics.
Sound insulation (acoustic separation of rooms) requires structural measures and cannot be achieved with molton alone. Stage molton is not sound-insulating, but it does have sound-absorbing properties and can be used for sound insulation. The fabric absorbs sounds in the high and medium frequency range in particular and is therefore often used as a sound-absorbing curtain or for acoustic curtains. It is particularly effective when the stage molton is pleated, sewn in double layers or combined with foils. The 500 g heavier Kalmuck is also often used for this purpose and is available on request.
As a rule of thumb, the greater the material consumption, the larger the absorption area. Stage Molton that is folded has a larger absorption area. For this, two and a half to three times the width of the material should be calculated.
Yes, the 300 g molton fabric is light-proof. Whether a fabric is light-proof depends on two aspects: the weave and the colour. The level of darkening varies depending on the colour: the darker the colour, the higher the degree of darkening. Stage molton is woven in a twill weave and is particularly dense. In black, stage molton is almost light-proof, the fabric achieves a blackout level of 95%. This is perfectly adequate; the human eye perceives this as a "blackout". This makes the fabric ideal for darkening event rooms, museums and windows in general, as well as for use as a photo background.
Stage molton is roughened on both sides, absorbing incoming light from the lighting. This property is particularly important for stage lighting and for photography: stage molton is a matt, neutral background for photo and film shoots that does not reflect, enabling the best shots.
Tip: for photography, stage molton is available in special colours (green screen and blue screen). We have green screen fabric in stock that is ready for shipping; blue screen is available on request.
Unlike decorative molton, stage molton is opaque in every colour. It is sold by the roll and used to create decorative and opaque stage cladding. Stage molton can also be used for theatre curtains and other curtains that need to protect against prying eyes.
Photo background, wall covering, blackout curtain or stage backdrop (backdrop) – the stage molton roll is suitable for a wide range of applications.
For all these purposes, the stage molton roll can be cut or torn to the correct size, as molton does not fray.
As an alternative to the cut-length and bulk goods, you can order stage molton and decorative molton customised as standard with a simple hem, hollow seam, lead tape, binding tape, Velcro tape or as a curtain with eyelets.
You can also have the molton made to measure. Whether you need a large-format theatre curtain or a stage curtain with special folds, with the Molton Configurator you can Have stage molton customised, in just a few clicks!
Molton fabrics are made of 100% cotton and can generally be washed. However, this will cause the fabric to lose its flame retardancy. Storing the fabric in a damp place, ironing it and putting it in the dryer will also reduce the impregnation of decorative molton and stage molton. To make the cotton fabric flame retardant again after washing, it can be treated with the flame retardants Bioretard. The fabric will only comply with the DIN 4102 standard again if it is used correctly.
Tip: To avoid creasing, molton should always be stored rolled up on a roll. Thanks to the high weight of the material, stage molton has the property of hanging itself out after a while.
