Stage molton is a heavy molton fabric, with a weight of 300 g/m². The fabric is sold by the metre and is 300 cm wide. It is available in lengths of 5 metres or more. The molton is flame retardant, it corresponds to fire class B1 according to DIN 4102 and is C-s1, d0-classified according to the Europe-wide valid DIN EN 13501-1.

Molton is made of 100% cotton. The flame-retardant fabric is roughened on both sides during production. This makes it soft and gives it a fluffy matt surface. What distinguishes stage molton from decorative molton is its high surface weight and particularly dense weave. In addition to its elegant appearance, stage molton also offers technical properties that make it suitable for a range of applications in event management and stage construction, as well as in theatre and exhibition stand fitting.

Is stage molton opaque?

Yes, stage molton is opaque in every colour. With 300 g molton, areas can be reliably protected from unwanted attention. The best conditions for an opaque curtain or backdrop (stage background). Is stage molton sound-absorbing?

Yes, stage molton is a sound-absorbing material. Its heavy weight of 300 grams per square metre, combined with a double-sided roughened surface, absorbs sound and reduces reverberation. Molton is used for sound insulation, for example as wall cladding, ceiling hanging fabric or as a curtain. Background noise is absorbed, ensuring balanced sound quality and pleasant room acoustics at music events.

Can molton be used for sound insulation?

In practice rooms, molton is also often used as a sound-absorbing curtain or for special acoustic curtains. Here, the molton fabric is particularly effective when sewn in a double layer or combined with foils. Kalmuk (stage molton 500g, available on request) is also suitable for this. As a rule of thumb for sound-absorbing fabrics, the higher the fabric consumption, the larger the absorption area.

Is stage molton opaque?

Yes, stage molton is light-proof. Rooms can be reliably darkened with the fabric. When used as a curtain or backdrop, stage molton reliably shields illuminated backgrounds. This ability depends on two aspects: the fabric in combination with the colour scheme. Stage molton is a woven fabric that is manufactured in a dense twill weave. The darkening effect is greater in dark colours than in light colours. Particularly in the colour black, stage molton from 300 g/m² is almost light-proof. Black stage molton can achieve a degree of darkening of up to 95%. An effect that the human eye already perceives as a "blackout". Perfect conditions, then, for blackout fabrics, which can be used in studios, home cinemas or to darken venues that are used during the day.

Stage Molton absorbs light

Stage Molton has a double-roughened surface on both sides, which absorbs light. This property has a positive effect on the lighting of rooms and the illumination of the stage. As a matte studio or photo background, stage molton is non-reflective and thus ensures the best recording quality.

Tip Greenbox and Bluebox: for film and photo, stage molton is available in special colours (greenscreen and bluescreen). As a background material, molton enables images to be cropped using the Chromakey method. We keep Greenbox fabric in stock for shipping, while Bluebox is available on request.

Stage molton by the metre can be used in a variety of ways

The non-tailored fabric sold by the metre ensures practical processing. The fabric does not necessarily have to be hemmed, because it does not fray at the side edges. If cutting with scissors is not desired, molton can be torn in the grain; the high-quality stage molton offers precise tear edges. In the event sector, the fabric by the metre is often used as a throw, for example for stylish decoration of trusses, or to cover equipment on, or unsold seats next to the stage.

Of course, molleton fabrics can also be attached to a framed canvas or other wooden structures using a stapler. Individual pieces of fabric can be attached using adhesive tape (adhesive textile tape, gaffa tape matte) or self-adhesive velcro tape. Pay attention to the weight per unit area! You can tighten backgrounds using holdon clips (bungee cords) and bungee cords or tie them loosely. It is not ideal to use the curtain material by the metre to attach it to rails or background systems; in this case, you should have the stage molton made up. For example, with hems (e.g. hollow seams), pleat tape (crimped tape) or eyelets.

All molton fabrics available in our shop are B1 certified and comply with DIN 4102. However, cotton molton is not a permanently flame-retardant fabric. With Bioretard impregnation for molton fabrics, the flame protection of the fabric can be renewed. The flame retardants provide a reliable impregnation for stage molton and decorative molton, so that your fabric is once again flame retardant.

Molton storage

Molton fabrics tend to wrinkle. To keep your stage molton wrinkle-free, we recommend storing it on rolls. To ensure that it remains flame-retardant, do not store molton in damp conditions. Stage molton is also an absorbent fabric. Be careful of mould and mildew! Incidentally, long storage times also have a negative effect on fire-resistant fabrics.
