Flame retardants reduce the flammability of building materials
Fire! Not if you treat your materials with suitable fire retardants... Fire safety regulations at public events are strict. In order to contribute to fire safety, all materials should be at least B1, i.e. flame retardant, in accordance with DIN 4102. The non-brominated flame retardants from allbuyone have flame-retardant properties and are reliable. The flame retardants are easy to use and protect people and the environment.
Did you know? Flame retardants are chemical substances that are capable of preventing a major fire by influencing the flammability of building materials. Flame retardants delay the fire behaviour or prevent the fire from occurring altogether.
You can purchase these flame retardants in the allbuyone shop:
There is no need for questionable chemicals. To reliably delay the flammability of your materials, you can treat them with various types of bromine-free flame retardants and thus make them flame-retardant yourself . You can order the following non-brominated flame retardants with short delivery times from allbuyone:
- Bioretard flame retardant
- Flame retardants Florimp K Verde
- Flame retardant Safeimp
Fire retardants sorted by material:
- Flame retardants for textiles (e.g. molton, carpets, wool, silk, velvet, cotton, fleece and plush)
- flame retardants for plastics (e.g. polypropylene, polyurethane/foam, polyamide, polyester, polyacrylic, lurex, artificial flowers)
- Flame retardants for wood, straw, hay, jute, dried flowers and other natural materials
- Flame retardants for paper (e.g. paper, cardboard, cellulose)
The fire retardants are non-brominated and non-halogenated compounds – they do not contain any toxic additives. They are free from harmful halogens and bromine (TBBPA, HBCD, PBDE).
Application of flame retardants
The flame retardants are safe to use. However, in order to effectively limit, slow down or prevent a fire, they must be used correctly. Depending on the product, non-brominated compounds can be applied as a spray, dip or coating. Please refer to the individual product descriptions for information on correct use and flame retardant consumption.
Note: The properties (e.g. colours) of the treated materials and building materials are usually not affected by flame retardants. However, we generally recommend carrying out a preliminary test on an inconspicuous area.
The flame retardants information sheet contains further information on the flame retardants that you can order from allbuyone.
What are flame retardants and how do they work?
There is often confusion about how fire retardants work. Strictly speaking, the term flame retardant describes the function rather than the class of a chemical compound. Fire retardants or flame retardants protect a product against premature ignition and thus make an important contribution to preventive fire protection. Products treated with flame retardants are flame-retardant in that they reduce flammability, delay combustion and thus prevent dangerous fires. In other words, if a flame-retardant material has already ignited, the chemical agent slows down the rapid spread of fire.
Important to know: In principle, flame retardants are used to minimise the risk of fire starting or spreading. They only work with low-intensity ignition sources, such as a smouldering cigarette, candle or electrical fault.
How do flame retardants work? Flame retardant sprays and immersion baths wet the surface of flammable products or migrate into the materials, making them less flammable. If the material is immersed in the agent, it is flame-retardant and difficult to ignite after treatment. In addition to these agents, there are also fire retardants that work physically, e.g. by cooling or forming flame-retardant foams.
Where does it make sense to use a flame retardant?
... and what does the DIN 4102 / DIN EN ISO 13501-1 standard say? In the event sector, the use of flame retardants is essential; here, the fire behaviour of building materials must be classified in accordance with DIN 4102 or EN ISO 13501-1 (test standard EN ISO 9239). At public events, the substances and materials must be at least flame retardant according to the regulations ( ) or combustible products must be retrofitted with appropriate flame retardants.
This applies to theatres, concerts and other public events and buildings, as well as certain requirements in hotels and restaurants. All building materials used in the entertainment industry, such as decorations on and off the stage, stage sets, props, curtains, fabrics, etc., both in public and professional areas , must comply with these safety regulations.
Keyword: environment and health: Are flame retardants harmful to health? Chemicals yes, but WITHOUT bromine (non-brominated) that is harmful to health
In our shop, you can only buy bromine-free flame retardants – free from harmful substances, bromine-free and halogen-free!
- TBBPA
- HBCD
- PBDE
Despite their high concentration and reliable effectiveness, fire retardants are environmentally neutral and harmless to health. Furthermore, they are not subject to labelling requirements under the Hazardous Substances Ordinance ; the chemicals do not leave any harmful residues that are harmful to the environment or can be detected in the soil or water.
Disposal of residues: All flame retardants can be disposed of normally – either in household waste or at recycling centres.
Federal Environment Agency (UBA) – offers publications on the health and environmental risks of chemicals The UBA offers further research publications on the effects, properties and hazards of flame retardants, not only in relation to existing allergies:
- Research report: Development of assessment criteria for the substitution of environmentally relevant flame retardants
- Flame retardants in products
