Molton fabric background for studio equipment - B1 flame retardant
Photo backgrounds are mainly used indoors. Strict fire safety regulations often apply in the event sector. In addition, background fabrics in studios are exposed to high temperatures. Unlike cardboard and paper backgrounds, fabric backgrounds such as molton are flame retardant. The fabric background is DIN 4102 B1-certified and C-s1, d0-classified according to DIN EN 13501-1 and can therefore be used safely as studio accessories.
Photo background fabric made of stage molton or decorative molton – what is the difference?
Stage molton is considered the classic fabric background for the studio: Stage molton weighs 300 g/m², this molton is opaque and completely light-proof in black.
Decorative molton is thinner and weighs only 160 g/m², similar to nettle and other decorative fabrics. Decorative molton is translucent and can be used with special (background) lighting (softbox, reflector, studio flash or continuous light) to create beautiful effects.
Particularly practical for photo backgrounds: both molton fabrics are matt and non-reflective, disturbing reflections from flash and continuous light are completely avoided – even a paper background, on the other hand, is slightly reflective. Both decorative and stage molton are available from allbuyone as rolls and by the metre or customised. This guarantees that the fabrics are always the right size!

How can you keep the photo background fabric free of creases and wrinkles? – Tips
Background fabrics made of molton can crease when used, which is not desirable for photographers – unless the creases are intended as a decorative element in the photo.
The good news first: Molton fabrics are generally washable and can even be ironed to keep the photo background fabric crease-free. Storing the fabric on a roll can also prevent creases and wrinkles. Alternatively, you can hang the fabric background taut, spray the creased areas with water to smooth them out and leave the Molton to dry completely to avoid water stains.
But be careful: the B1 fire protection certification according to DIN 4102 ( ) is lost through washing and ironing! For outdoor applications, you often do not need a B1 certificate for your accessories – but when used in a studio, on an indoor set or in other indoor areas, the material used must be certified as flame retardant. In this case , you can renew the fire protection:
After washing or ironing, the B1 fire protection impregnation can be restored by the professional application of Bioretard flame retardants.
Photo background fabric or cardboard/paper?
