Finding the right product: Tips for selecting adhesive tapes
It is often impossible to say which coloured tape is right for your intended use. Important to know: Professional bonding depends on at least three factors:
- The desired application of the adhesive tape itself. For example, paper tape is not suitable for electrical applications.
- The surface to which the adhesive tape is to be applied. Is the surface rough and porous, deformed or smooth?
- The stresses to which the coloured adhesive tapes will be exposed. These play a very important role and should not be underestimated! They can be mechanical, chemical or thermal in nature.
Before purchasing coloured adhesive tape, you should ask yourself the following questions:
What surface is to be bonded? A smooth substrate offers excellent adhesion properties. This is because the adhesive strength of the tapes is inherently stronger on smooth surfaces than on porous, rough and uneven surfaces such as stone, concrete, wood, asphalt, etc. So-called "low-energy surfaces" such as Teflon, rubber, polyethylene, polypropylene and silicone-based paints are also difficult substrates that should be bonded with a coloured adhesive tape with high adhesive strength. Are there angled surfaces, corners, curves and edges? Then make sure you choose a coloured tape that adapts to the shape, such as a cloth tape or a PVC tape. Or opt for a roll of adhesive tape with an aggressive adhesive and a tough adhesive mass.
Should the coloured adhesive tape stick permanently or only for a certain period of time? Does the adhesive tape need to be removable without leaving any residue after bonding? What many people don't know isthat the adhesive strength of a coloured adhesive tape itself is less important here. The quality of the adhesive is much more decisive for the residue-free removability of the tapes. Gentle adhesive systems, such as a natural rubber adhesive, can often be removed completely without leaving any residue after bonding.
Be careful with sensitive surfaces! Paintedsurfaces , certain plastics, natural wood or natural stone such as marble, travertine, granite, etc. are considered "sensitive surfaces". The risk of adhesive damage is very high here! Under certain circumstances, it may no longer be possible to remove the coloured tape at all because the adhesive bonds with the substrate. To avoid damage, always test the coloured adhesive tape on an inconspicuous area first. Be sure to use adhesive tape with a non-corrosive adhesive on such surfaces , as aggressive adhesives can also cause discolouration!
Does the coloured adhesive tape need to adhere immediately, i.e. have high initial adhesion, for example to mount or fasten something? Or should it be possible to change the position of the tape again? The information on our coloured adhesive tapes always includes details of the tape's immediate adhesion. Medium immediate adhesion allows the adhesive tape to be repositioned. With low immediate adhesion and low adhesive strength, for example, the coloured adhesive tape can even be used several times.
What weather/climatic conditions will the adhesive tape be exposed to at the application site? Will the coloured adhesive tape be used indoors or outdoors? Will the coloured tape be exposed to extreme cold or heat? What other influences will it be exposed to? Chemicals, petrol, oil and grease? Can the coloured tape be used indoors and outdoors? Is the tape exposed to particular mechanical stresses? Please always refer to the technical data for the coloured adhesive tapes. Is the desired adhesive tape:
- weatherproof, waterproof and UV-resistant?
- Is the coloured adhesive tape chemically resistant and what is its temperature resistance?
- Does it offer particularly high tear resistance and elasticity or high abrasion resistance and durability? Or perhaps high elongation at break?
- Is it flame-retardant or non-conductive for event use?
- Would you like to label the adhesive tape, should it have an anti-slip coating or does it need to be particularly adaptable to different shapes?
What is the intended use? Coloured adhesive tapes have a wide range of applications . What would you like to do?
- Fix colours and mount items,
- cover and protect,
- lay or bundle,
- or mark, label, decorate and design in a striking way, e.g. with neon green or neon pink tape?
Conclusion: In addition to the choice of colours, the criteria described above play a very important role. The adhesive technology can be individually tailored to the materials used (base material and adhesive) and their specific properties.
All important data, properties and areas of application for all individual adhesive tapes can always be found in the specific product descriptions in our shop. Do you have any specific questions? Please give us a call, we will be happy to advise you personally.
The carrier material of coloured adhesive tapes
The carrier, also known as the adhesive carrier, is essentially the base material of every adhesive tape. It is the material that is coated with adhesive and then given a coloured finish. There are single-sided adhesive tapes and double-sided tapes. Special adhesive tapes, known as transfer tapes, do not even have a carrier. The carrier material of coloured tapes is often made of
- fabric (e.g. PVC-coated)
- plastic (foils made of PP, PVC, etc.)
- paper (artist/console tape, paper tape, crepe tape and packing tape)
The carrier is then given a coloured finish. However, it can also be transparent. Here you will find products such as adhesive tape made of highly transparent film (scroll tape) and translucent double-sided cloth tape.
Colours: ultra-matt or glossy? Coloured markers that glow brightly under UV light?
The surface finish (lacquer or coating) of the adhesive carrier ultimately determines whether the coloured adhesive tapes are glossy or matt, extra matt and non-reflective, or whether the rolls are equipped with fluorescent additives. For example , there are neon-coloured tapes that glow brightly under UV light and provide clearly visible marking in the dark or decorative effects.
Coloured markers in neon
We offer the following neon colours in our standard cloth tape and paper tape range:

The adhesive on adhesive tape
What adhesive is used on the tape? Adhesive technology has a lot to offer when it comes to adhesives. Adhesive tapes are mainly coated with silicone or acrylate adhesives, resins or synthetic rubbers, as well as natural rubber adhesives and mixtures thereof. To avoid making the topic overly complicated, here are a few tips:
Interesting facts about adhesive strength: You will always find details about the adhesive properties of an adhesive tape in the product overview. Adhesive strength is officially classified into three grades, with the physical value given in newtons per mm. The following average values apply officially for a 10 mm wide adhesive tape:
- Low (weak) adhesive strength: e.g. < 1.5 N/10 mm
- Medium adhesive strength: approx. 1.5 to 3 N/10 mm
- High (strong) adhesive strength: > 3.0 N/mm
Tip: Optimal adhesion through pre-treatment of the adhesive surfaces
To achieve optimum adhesive results with coloured adhesive tapes and to ensure the best adhesion of a tape, the adhesive surface should be cleaned and, if necessary, pre-treated. Ensure that the surface is dust-free and remove all dirt, oil or grease, for example with grease-dissolving cleaning agents or acetone. The adhesive strength can also be significantly increased by roughening the surface mechanically (sanding). Particularly difficult-to-bond surfaces can also be treated chemically beforehand with primers or bonding agents.
Equally important is the contact pressure with which you apply the coloured adhesive tape.
When sticking the coloured adhesive tapes, always ensure that sufficient pressure is applied to the adhesive surface. A squeegee can be used to save energy here. Depending on the type of adhesive tape, the final adhesive strength only develops some time after sticking – this can take several hours or even weeks. The tape should not be subjected to any stress before the final adhesion is achieved.
Overview of our top sellers in the coloured adhesive tape category
Whether green, yellow, purple, pink, blue, brown or orange... our range includes not only different colours but also different carrier materials:
Coloured cloth tape – a multi-talented product
A cloth tape is usually a particularly adaptable and highly durable adhesive tape. It is available in many bright colours as well as striped ely in yellow-black or red-white. A cloth adhesive tape is easy to work with. It sticks to almost all surfaces, whether smooth, shaped or irregular. Coloured cloth tape is suitable for indoor and outdoor use – the tapes offer good static and mechanical load-bearing capacity, are weather-resistant and seal watertight. A good quality cloth tape with the right adhesive can be removed without leaving any residue, even after a long period of time . You can also order special tapes for permanent bonding. In addition to sealing, repairing and mounting, colourful cloth tapes are often used in event supplies to bundle cables and wires. They are also popular as markers for marking work, decorative design or for labelling and warning markings.
