What is cloth tape?
What is cloth tape? Cloth tape is a
- self-adhesive adhesive tape with an adhesive applied to a fabric backing.
- This makes fabric tape particularly flexible, adaptable to any surface and extremely tear-resistant. Most fabric tapes offer excellent mechanical properties against abrasion and high resistance to chemical and weather influences.
- Depending on the adhesive coating, each cloth tape offers individual adhesive strength.
- As an all-round or universal tape, the tape is suitable for a wide range of applications, such as waterproof sealing, repairing, bundling, packaging and fastening
Cloth tapes are available with different carrier fabrics, for example, the fabric can be made of cotton, cellulose, glass fibres, rayon (artificial silk), foil/plastic. Depending on the adhesive, the adhesives bond with the surface and are particularly resistant to ageing, or the tapes can be removed over a long period of time without leaving any residue. A cloth tape guarantees easy processing. The adhesive tapes can be easily torn by hand . Generally across, fine fabric (mesh) often even along the exact edges. There are many names for cloth tape: the tape is often referred to as duct tape, construction tape, gaffer tape, gaffa tape, stage tape, repair tape, or duck tape.
Quality: Cloth tape with extra power and special properties
The quality of a cloth tape can basically be measured by the material and the properties of the fabric, the type and strength of the coated adhesive, the total thickness of the tape and its surface coating (e.g. PE coated or open, textile surface). Accordingly, a high-quality cloth tape offers high durability and resistance, optimum properties in applications and varying adhesive performance. The most important strengths of cloth tape in detail:
Adhesive performance of cloth tapes: Adhesive & adhesive strength – from extremely strong to low adhesion
Each cloth tape has an individual adhesive formula ( ) and therefore different adhesive performance (adhesion). Strictly speaking, the adhesive strength of a cloth tape can be divided into:
- Initial adhesion, also known as tack.
- Adhesion, which describes the general adhesion of the adhesive to the surfaces to be bonded
- And final adhesive strength (cohesion), which describes the internal strength of the adhesive itself.
Adhesive strength
The adhesive strength of every adhesive tape is measured in accordance with DIN EN 1939:2003 (self-adhesive tapes) and classified in newtons per centimetre (N/cm). The following applies here: Low adhesive strength is approximately < 1.5 N/cm, medium to high adhesive strength is > 3 N/cm.
For an extra-strong cloth tape, i.e. a tape with very high adhesive strength, the adhesive strength is then around 6 N/cm (e.g. GT 571) or 8.7 N/cm (Pro Gaff Gaffer Tape).
The fabric: advantages over conventional adhesive tape in terms of tear strength and adhesion
What advantages does the fabric carrier offer over conventional adhesive tape, for example made of paper, PVC or foil? A fabric offers higher tear resistance per se. In addition, gaffa tapes are particularly adaptable to shape and adhere particularly well to smooth, rough, structured and deformed surfaces. The fabric itself enables waterproof or dustproof sealing. When used as repair tape, cloth tape enables seamless adhesion to the surfaces to be bonded.
Coated or uncoated fabric? What are the differences?
Our range offers you a choice of coated and uncoated cloth tapes. But which tapes offer which advantages? Unfortunately, it is not possible to give a general answer without knowing the exact application. In general, however, the following can be said:
Uncoated cloth tapes are extremely adaptable to shape, usually offer the highest tear strength, reflect less and are easier to write on (e.g. with a ballpoint pen).
Coated cloth tapes, on the other hand, are almost always waterproof and more resistant to abrasion and weathering. They can be used both indoors and outdoors . By the way: Cloth tapes with a flame-retardant coating are available for event applications.
Special feature: fluorescent cloth tapes
Some tapes have a special fluorescent coating. These duct tapes (e.g. GT 571, tesa 4671, Pro Gaff Neon) glow brightly under UV light/black light thanks to fluorescent particles .
How do different temperatures affect gaffa tape?
In order to use a cloth tape for repairing, sealing, closing or reliable fastening, it is important to know whether the tape is resistant to ageing and weather and UV stable. You can always find this information in our detailed product descriptions. It is also important to consider the temperature range in which a cloth tape will adhere securely.
High or very cold temperatures often have a negative effect on adhesion: some adhesives melt in heat, while others become brittle in cold temperatures and also lose their adhesive strength.

What you should know before buying cloth tape
If you choose a low-cost all-purpose cloth tape, for example , it will often stick extremely well – but may not be possible to remove without leaving residue. The adhesive tape can bond with the surface to which it is applied – which may be desirable for permanent fastening. However, for temporary use or when masking sensitive surfaces, for example, some premium tapes are often the better choice. They also adhere securely and bombproof, but thanks to a different adhesive system , they can be removed without leaving any adhesive residue even after weeks . Such tapes are very well suited for short-term applications in stage construction and event supplies. For example, for labelling, marking, repairing, labelling or bundling cables or other sensitive surfaces.
Further information about cloth tape
If you want to buy the right cloth tape, it doesn't hurt to take a closer look at this strong tape. Below you will find the most important terms, properties and much more explained briefly and concisely:
Removing cloth tape
Removing cloth tape is not always easy, as its adhesion depends on several factors. These are:
- the length of time the cloth tape has been adhering to the surface
- and the influences that have affected the adhesive tape (UV radiation, cold, heat, mechanical stress, etc.).
- The bonded surface itself (smooth, rough, treated, untreated)
- the adhesive adhesive-tape/adhesive selected for the application
- and the correct technique used to remove it.
As a general rule, fabric tape should always be removed evenly and slowly at a 90° angle. If the tape does not come off without leaving any residue, there are plenty of tips and tricks that can be tried, taking into account the sensitivity of the surface, according to the principle of trial and error. These include warming with a hair dryer, rubbing with a mixture of vinegar, water and washing-up liquid, using benzine, spirit or orange oil cleaner, and applying tesa adhesive remover.
Is cloth tape tear-resistant?
Adhesive tape made of fabric is extremely tear-resistant. The tear elongation (break elongation) is specified individually for each product and indicates the factor (%) by which a cloth tape can be stretched before breaking. The tear strength describes how tear-resistant the cloth tape is when subjected to maximum force (maximum tensile force). The tear strength is always based on the tape width (25 mm, 50 mm, 75 mm) and is also specified in N/mm or N/cm.
Is cloth tape waterproof?
Whether a cloth tape is waterproof depends on the design. Our range includes waterproof cloth tapes and cloth tapes that are water-repellent. The uncoated cloth tapes from the Pro Gaff brand are water-repellent. The PE-coated cloth tapes " " from Advance Tapes and from our own brand GRIP Eventbasics are waterproof when bonded.
The extra advantage of cloth tapes: easy handling for every application
When it comes to processing, a cloth tape has several advantages over ordinary adhesive tape: adhesive cloth tapes have a high tensile strength and therefore enable dimensionally stable repairs when used under high tensile stress. This is extremely practical, for example, when waterproofing or sealing round and irregular surfaces, such as pipes and cables.
Every gaffa tape can be torn off the roll by hand. It can always be torn by hand in the transverse direction. High-quality cloth tapes have a particularly fine fabric with a high thread count. This means that the tape can also be torn lengthwise with precise tear edges.
Who invented adhesive tape? Was it brands such as tesa, 3M, Scotch, Pro Tapes & Co.?
These are just a few of the brands that manufacture cloth tape. However, none of them invented adhesive tape. The pharmacist Oscar Troplowitz is considered to be the inventor. In 1901, he invented the first adhesive bandage for Beiersdorf AG, which is still known today as "Leukoplast". In 1925, a 3M engineer coated crepe paper with adhesive (masking tape). Just five years later, he created the first transparent (foil) adhesive tape, which we know today as tesa (tesafilm). There are now over 1000 different types of adhesive cloth tape.
Duct tape, gaffer tape, duct tape, gaffa tape: what are they?
There are many theories as to why there are a handful of synonymous names for the highly praised cloth tape. Duct tape is thought to have a military background, as the German Armed Forces used to repair their tanks with silver tape. Duck tape is thought to be so named because it is as waterproof as a duck's plumage. In the case of gaffa or gaffer tape, it stands to reason that the cloth tape was given this name because it is used by gaffers, the chief lighting technicians on film sets.
