Greenscreen fabric molton: film and photo background for the green box

A molton fabric as a background offers many advantages
Not everyone has a professional green screen room designed in the key colour (green or blue) or a large screen available. It is also practical if the green box or blue box is mobile and movable. Fabrics (stage molton) in blue or green screen colours are therefore often used as studio accessories and attached as flexible film and photo backgrounds.
Why is the greenscreen fabric colour (or bluescreen) blue or green?
Quite simply, these colours are virtually non-existent on the human body, so the desired images are not accidentally projected onto the presenters and actors!
Which fabrics are suitable for green screen technology?
Several materials are available as green box backgrounds. But what is the difference between a cheap synthetic fabric and a high-quality background fabric made of stage molton (100% cotton)? What do you need to bear in mind in a photo studio, on set or outdoors in natural light?
Stage molton as a high-quality greenscreen background
Stage molton has proven particularly suitable as a fabric for greenscreen backgrounds – heavy cotton fabrics (300 g/m²), which are roughened on both sides in a special manufacturing process, giving them a matt surface. Whether daylight or studio lighting, the fabrics enable reflection-free recording in any lighting conditions.
A photo background made of stage molton is also opaque and flame-resistant. The rich green colour offers many advantages for the chromakey process, enabling a vibrant colour impression and making it ideal for digital image and video editing. It is important to stretch the stage molton as tightly as possible to achieve a uniform green background for cropping.
Caution: not all molton is the same
For cost reasons, the lightweight 160 g/m² decorative molton is often used as a background in photo studios instead of stage molton. Although this molton can be used as a green video and photo background, it is important to note that it is translucent and does not offer complete opacity. This molton is completely unsuitable for green box technology outdoors.
Synthetic chromakey green screen fabric: not a good idea!
Many shops often offer particularly inexpensive green box or blue box fabrics made of synthetic material . But be careful: These are often very light (140 g/m²) and therefore usually translucent. The stiff, shapeless material often cannot be hung without wrinkles, and ironing is completely impossible due to its poor heat tolerance. The light weight causes the background fabric to flutter unintentionally outdoors. In addition, unlike stage molton made of cotton, synthetic greenscreen has a shiny surface, which is not ideal for lighting a studio background.

Alternative: Greenscreen carpet
Did you know that you can use a greenbox carpet in addition to a molton photo background? The B1 carpet in greenscreen colour is also certified as flame retardant and can be laid out smoothly without raised edges. The non-slip carpets are particularly suitable for moving video recordings or for an outdoor green box. This allows you to edit a dance performance with sensational effects for cinema and television, for example. The green carpet can also be permanently glued to a wall or background system.
