Greenscreen - green background fabric for chroma keying
Film and television technicians use a greenscreen as a background for colour-based image processing. Chroma keying requires a green box with a background in the key colour green. The green screen can be made of various materials, but is often made of fabric. At allbuyone, you can buy greenscreen made of stage molton. The cotton fabric has many properties that are important for high-quality photo and film shoots. The background fabric is matt, light-absorbing and wrinkle-free thanks to its heavy quality.
Green screen – what is it?
[icon type="icon--question" size="large" color="green"]A greenscreen is a green background made of fabric, paper or similar material that is used in photo studios and in film for colour-based image isolation, known as chroma keying (chroma key process).
How does a greenscreen work?
The green screen is used in photo studios as well as in film and television. Photos are taken or film scenes are shot in front of a green background in a so-called green box (green background and green floor). In post-processing, the motif can be cut out (isolated) using a cut-out mask that defines the visible areas. Once the subject has been cut out, the desired background is combined with the recorded foreground. This step is known among experts as "cutting out". The green background is thus replaced by another image, such as a weather map, landscapes or an action scene.
Advantages of chroma keying
A green box helps to save costs, as the entire team does not have to travel to the location; instead, the scene is shot in the studio and the background is added later on a PC. For safety reasons, particularly dangerous or complex stunt and action scenes are also shot in front of a greenscreen.
Which green for greenscreen? Is there a greenscreen colour code?
The green used for chroma keying is a special green, a bright neon green with reflective additives that reflects light particularly well and requires less illumination. Possible RAL green tones are RAL 6018 or RAL 6020.
Important: There is no single greenscreen colour code. The lighting is much moreimportant .
Crucial: the right lighting
The decisive factor in chroma keying is the lighting. The green of the greenscreen must be evenly illuminated; this is the only way to ensure fast chroma keying and successful cropping. Diffusers help to ensure even illumination of the background.
Also crucial: the shade of green must be precisely matched to the camera used. The correct shade of green can be determined using a waveform monitor and spot measurement.
Would you like to combine your existing greenscreen with a new fabric?
Different shades of green require different lighting and camera settings. When purchasing greenscreen molton, therefore, take care not to combine different shades.
The molton greenscreen available in our shop has the RAL colour value 6037 pure green (approximate value).
Greenscreen or bluescreen – which is better?
There is no general answer to the question of whether greenscreen, bluescreen or blackscreen is better. The key colour used depends on the object to be photographed.
Greenscreen produces a brighter colour impression than blue and allows – especially important when photographing people – the wearing of blue clothing in all shades of blue (jeans, etc.). Another aspect in favour of a green screen is the pixel properties of many cameras: here, a pixel consists of one red, one blue and two green pixels. In a video, there is therefore twice as much image information available for green.
Blue screen blue, on the other hand, is often used for portrait photography, as blue does not occur in human skin tones.

Attaching greenscreen – tips
Depending on the finish, there are various options for mounting the green screen to the background system:
The greenscreen with tunnel seam is ideal for hanging with rods or pipes.
For unfinished greenscreen (sold by the metre or in rolls), we recommend Holdon clips or adhesive tape. The fabric can also be attached to a background system with staples.
Note: To prevent the fabric from creasing, you should store molton on rolls and avoid folding or creasing it!
