What is needle felt carpet?
Needle felt carpets are not classic carpets for living spaces. Unlike conventional woven or tufted carpets, needle felt floor coverings consist of a particularly densely needled fibre material. The surface also differs in terms of look and feel from a living room carpet (for example, compared to a soft high pile/loop pile quality). Depending on the design, needle felt carpet offers a more or less rough wear layer. Needle felt carpets are available in rolls, tiles or as stair mats. Thanks to their high durability, needle felt carpets have proven themselves as temporary event and exhibition floor coverings, and in some cases also as fitted carpets for commercial areas.
Needle felt carpet properties
Needle felt carpets are robust carpets that are suitable as temporary floor coverings, and in some cases also for longer-term installation in commercial and residential areas. Here is an overview of the most important properties of needle felt products:
- Material: 100% polypropylene
- High robustness and durability
- Flame retardant B1 according to DIN 4102 / Bfl-s1 according to EN 13501-1
- Heat resistant
- Can be laid in rooms with underfloor heating
- Good impact sound insulation
- Antistatic and easy-care surface
- Dirt and moisture repellent – easy to clean by vacuuming
- Lint-free, edges do not fray
- Suitable for allergy sufferers
- Easy to cut and simple to lay
- Suitable for indoor and short-term outdoor use
Please note: our needle felt carpets have a water-repellent backing and can be laid outdoors for short periods. For longer outdoor use, you should choose carpets with nubs instead.
Needle felt carpet, flame retardant – important for exhibition floors
Classified fire behaviour of floor coverings is particularly important at public events, in exhibition construction, and in commercial and industrial areas. According to the manufacturer, our needle felt carpets are tested materials in accordance with the European standard DIN EN 13501-1 with Bfl-1 (formerly fire class B1 according to DIN 4102). The textile floor coverings are therefore considered to be flame-retardant materials.
Self-adhesive needle felt carpet – what is it?
Needle felt carpet tiles are available in self-laying or self-adhesive versions. The self-adhesive version consists of carpet tiles that are manufactured without a backing and heavy coating and are often available at low prices in DIY stores. The self-adhesive tile often consists of inexpensive needle felt, which is coated with adhesive on the underside and covered with foil. Due to their low weight, these carpet tiles cannot be laid loose, only glued. But be careful! Needle felt floor tiles often stick stubbornly to the subfloor and are very difficult to remove with solvents. They should therefore not be laid on sensitive floor coverings such as parquet or laminate.
For temporary installation at exhibition stands, we recommend self-lying carpet tiles. These carpet tiles with a weighted backing lie flat on the floor without additional fixing and can be easily removed and reused after the event.
Needle felt carpet production
How is needle felt manufactured? Needle felt is manufactured using the needle punch process. First, loose fibres – usually synthetic fibres made of polypropylene, polyamide, polyester or similar materials – are processed (carded) into a loose fleece. Several of these fleece layers are then moistened with binding agents and mechanically woven together (= felted) using a large number of barbed needles. Depending on the movement of the needle board, a different surface appearance is created with loops (velour needle felt), felt or a ribbed structure. The mechanical compaction creates a stable, dense fibre fleece – the needle felt.
Finally, the nonwoven fabric is chemically bonded or impregnated and, if necessary, treated with additives to make it flame-retardant, antistatic, etc., so that the end result is a durable needle felt with a hard-wearing wear layer.
Laying needle felt carpet
Needle felt carpets can be laid quickly and easily as temporary floor coverings at trade fairs or exhibitions. The carpets do not need to be glued down over the entire surface for the duration of the event; they are simply laid loose and fixed in place with adhesive tape. Needle felt carpet tiles can even be laid out over large areas in rooms without any fixing at all; thanks to their high weight and anti-slip backing, they lie stable and secure on level surfaces. In areas subject to extreme wear, such as door thresholds, and when used as edge tiles without wall boundaries, the tiles should be fixed in place for safety reasons. Here you will find detailed laying instructions for carpet tiles.
Cutting needle felt carpet
Needle felt carpet can be easily cut to size using a cutter, scissors or multi-cutter. Rips exhibition flooring and flat felt carpet with foil are particularly thin carpets with low thickness, which are especially easy to cut. Make sure your tools have sharp blades to make cutting easier! A carpet cutting rail is also helpful for achieving precise and straight edges at corners and walls.
Removing and disposing of needle felt carpet
Don't want to reuse your used needle felt carpet? No problem! Non-adhesive needle felt carpeting made of PP synthetic fibre can be easily disposed of at recycling centres as residual or bulky waste, usually free of charge depending on the size. In addition, some event organisers offer an on-site disposal service for exhibition carpets.
Please note: Carpets that have been glued down over the entire surface and leave a large amount of adhesive residue after removal must be disposed of as construction waste.
Cleaning needle felt carpets
Needle felt carpets are particularly easy-care floor coverings. The surface is resistant to dirt and moisture and does not shed fibres. Dust, crumbs or loose dirt can be easily removed with regular vacuum cleaning.
For heavier soiling, the carpet should be cleaned immediately with a little clear water or a mild cleaning agent. It is generally important not to rub the stain too hard, but to treat it gently in a circular motion from the outside in. And what to do with stubborn stains on carpet tiles? You can simply replace individual dirty tiles with new ones – without having to remove the entire floor covering.
