Notes: As a general rule, double-sided adhesive tape with a fabric backing is ideal for bonding rough, textured and porous surfaces due to its ability to conform to the shape of the surface. A foil backing, on the other hand, is more suitable for bonding smooth surfaces and is usually easier to remove in one piece. Test bonding with adhesive tapes: Please always test before final bonding
Before final application: Regardless of whether you are applying the double-sided adhesive tape to wood, plastic, paper, metal, tiles, glass, plaster or other surfaces, we always recommend testing the adhesive on an inconspicuous area first to avoid damage.
All technical data provided by the manufacturer listed here are based on average values. In principle, however, the adhesion and quality of a bond with double-sided adhesive tapes always depends on the duration of use, the nature of the substrates and the local bonding conditions, such as the influence of underfloor heating, sunlight, water, cold or heat, etc.
Important to know: The higher the initial contact pressure when bonding, the better the double-sided adhesive tape adheres and the higher the load-bearing capacity of the bond. In addition: The combination of adhesive and carrier, as well as the substrates to be bonded (smooth and closed or open and sensitive), determine the respective adhesive properties of the adhesive tape and whether the tape forms a permanent bond with the respective substrates and whether any undesirable discolouration occurs, or whether the double-sided tape can be removed again (without leaving any residue) after bonding.

What is double-sided adhesive tape?
What is double-sidedadhesive tape? And how does double-sided adhesive tape work? Double-sided adhesive tape can be used for bonding on both sides. The carrier of the adhesive tape, e.g. a foil, a fabric, a foam material, etc., is coated with adhesive on both sides – with an adhesive of identical or different adhesive strength.
Double-sided adhesive tape is often used as laying tape for carpets, while strong double-sided adhesive tapes enable objects to be fixed in place and eliminate the need for drilling and screws. Extra strong, permanently adhesive double-sided adhesive tapes are even suitable for fixing mirrors to walls (mirror adhesive tape).
In other industrial areas, double-sided adhesive tapes are used for splicing paper, in the construction industry for attaching vapour barriers, and in industry (e.g. the automotive industry) for bonding strips, emblems or other parts. In these cases, even carrier-free double-sided adhesive tapes are often used.
How to remove double-sided adhesive tape?
There are two problems to contend with when removing double-sided adhesive tapes: The adhesive residues are one problem. Discolouration or other permanent damage to the surface is the other problem.
This is because aggressive adhesive systems can form a permanent bond with surfaces , migrating into the substrate and attacking it. Sensitive substrates such as untreated or painted wood, artificial or natural stone, certain plastics, high-quality parquet and wooden floorboards are particularly at risk.
But back to the question: How can double-sided adhesive tape be removed? And more specifically: How can double-sided adhesive tape be removed without leaving any residue?
The most important tip for removing adhesive tape without leaving any residue: take your time! Pull the tape off slowly at a 90° angle!
Has the adhesive left residue on the surface?
If adhesive residue remains on the surfaces, there are a few tips and tricks you can use to remove double-sided adhesive tape without leaving any residue. But be careful: the stronger the agent, the greater the risk of damaging the surfaces!
Try to remove the double-sided adhesive tape residue using the following methods:
- a hair dryer, which heats the adhesive and allows it to be removed mechanically
- with oil
- soapy water (dishwashing liquid) or a spirit-based glass cleaner; vinegar can also be effective
- with cleaning alcohol (90%), or better still 70% for all plastic surfaces
- acetone (nail polish remover)
- with tesa adhesive remover
- With orange oil cleaner from a health food store
Note: Please always test the product on an inconspicuous area first, as the product itself may also damage the surface!

Double-sided adhesive tape GT 702 – pure acrylic for use on sensitive surfaces, removable
The double-sided adhesive tape GT 702 is a film adhesive tape with two sides of different adhesive strengths. It is perfect for use as a temporary adhesive tape at trade fairs or events, and thanks to its mild adhesive formula (pure acrylate), it can also be used on most sensitive surfaces.
The covered side is extra strong (acrylate rubber), so that carpets, for example, can be securely fixed in place. The open side is extra weak thanks to pure acrylate – a mild adhesive that can be applied to many sensitive surfaces and can be removed without leaving any residue. The double-sided adhesive tape can be removed without leaving any residue for at least 2 weeks, often even longer, as its adhesive strength increases only insignificantly during the bonding period. The double-sided adhesive tape can be used indoors and , thanks to its good weather resistance, also outdoors. Another special feature: this double-sided adhesive tape has a yellow or black transparent backing. This makes it easy to spot any adhesive tape residue when removing the tape.
Double-sided adhesive cloth tape GT 703 – Universal fastening, strong/weaker
This roll of double-sided tape with a fabric backing is suitable for just about any application and is the standard for crafts and workshops. This double-sided adhesive tape has two sides with different adhesive strengths, which are cleanly separated by a yellow, siliconised paper. The open side is very strong, while the side facing the substrate is weaker (adhesive strength on steel 7 N/cm and 3.1 N/cm).
This double-sided adhesive tape can be used for mounting or as a laying tape for carpet backs that are difficult to bond. The fabric adapts perfectly to particularly rough and porous surfaces. The adhesive has a fairly good re-adhesion capacity, holds securely and can be removed from many materials with virtually no residue (approx. 4-5 days, depending on the substrate).
GT 703 is available in widths of 50 mm, 19 mm and 38 mm!
Double-sided film adhesive tape GT 704 – universal bonding, strong/weaker
Also a standard product for universal use, suitable for fastening or as a laying tape. Like its counterpart GT 703, the double-sided adhesive tape has two sides with different adhesive strengths and, thanks to its foil backing, adheres particularly well to smooth surfaces. The sides, which are cleanly separated by a paper liner, are extremely strong (adhesive strength on steel 12 N/cm) and weaker towards the substrate (3.6 N/cm).
Thanks to its thin, transparent (PET foils), this double-sided adhesive tape is also ideal for invisible attachment, crafting and mounting. With a weaker adhesive coating on one side, this double-sided adhesive tape is slightly easier to remove thanks to the foil backing and can be removed almost completely without leaving any residue for approx. 4-7 days, depending on the surface .
Double-sided adhesive cloth tape, strong GT 705 – permanent adhesion instead of drilling
This roll of tape is the powerhouse among double-sided adhesive tapes. A high-performance adhesive provides strong and permanent adhesion with maximum immediate adhesion. The extra-strong adhesive (rubber adhesive) applied to a fabric backing is particularly suitable for fixing to porous, structured and uneven surfaces. These double-sided adhesive tapes can even be applied to difficult surfaces and in heat and humidity. The double-sided adhesive cloth tape is heat-resistant up to 80°C, can be used indoors and outdoors for short periods, and is virtually waterproof. The special fabric carrier is highly adaptable and stretchable.
This double-sided adhesive tape is only suitable for permanent bonding – it can be attached to surfaces that are difficult to bond (PVC, asphalt, concrete, etc.), e.g. on construction sites or in the home workshop, for craftsmen renovating buildings, etc. The adhesive strength of the tape increases with long-term use. The adhesive tape can bond with substrates, which may cause discolouration. The strong adhesive cannot be removed without leaving residue, especially after prolonged adhesion !
Double-sided film adhesive tape, strong GT 706 – permanent adhesion instead of screws
The counterpart to GT 705, but with a thin, transparent foil as a carrier, which allows invisible hanging, fastening and attachment. The high-performance adhesive offers strong and permanent bonding, even with very high initial adhesion. The extra-strong adhesive (rubber adhesive) has proven itself for almost any installation and adheres even in heat and humidity. The double-sided adhesive cloth tape is heat-resistant up to 80°C, almost waterproof and can be used indoors and outdoors for short periods. The thin foil backing is stretchable and particularly suitable for bonding to smooth surfaces. This double-sided adhesive tape is a universal tool for mounting and fastening. It provides security when attaching decorations, lightweight mirrors or signs.
This double-sided tape is permanently adhesive – the adhesive strength of the tape increases slightly with long-term use. The double-sided adhesive tape cannot be removed without leaving residues. After removal, especially after prolonged adhesion, the tape may leave discolouration on the surface.
tesa 4939 Double-sided adhesive tape, strong/weaker
The double-sided adhesive tape from tesa allows double-sided bonding with different adhesive strengths (strong and weaker). When used as a temporary mounting tape , tesa tesafix 4939 adheresstrongly to carpet and weakly to the surface. However, the universal double-sided adhesive tape can also be used for a wide range of other applications: for example, the tape is also suitable for crafting and fixing decorative materials or for hanging signs, posters, etc.
The adhesive, a synthetic rubber, sticks to both sides with two different adhesive strengths: The side that is stuck to the surface has a weaker adhesive strength and can be removed from many surfaces almost without leaving any residue for up to 14 days.
By the way: You can also buy tesafix 4939 double-sided adhesive tape in our shop in a narrower width than usual; we offer the tape in widths of 38 mm and 50 mm.
These tesa assembly tapes/installation tapes are extremely adaptable to different shapes thanks to their fabric and are up to 40% stretchable. The double-sided adhesive tapes have good chemical resistance and moisture resistance. However, like most other double-sided adhesive tapes, tesafix 4939 has limited resistance to ageing.
Tip: Installation tape for particularly sensitive surfaces
Are you looking for installation tapes that can be temporarily applied to very sensitive surfaces? Our range offers the double-sided tape GT 702 with a very low-tack side and, alternatively, the GT 704 with a stronger adhesive strength.
If, after a trial application, you find that you are not satisfied with the removability of these double-sided adhesive tapes, we recommend using masking tape underneath. These easily removable paper adhesive tapes are popular with professionals for temporary installation at trade fairs or other events to underlay double-sided adhesive tapes.
Here's how it works: Stick paper adhesive tape to the sensitive floor, apply double-sided adhesive tape exactly over it, and you're done! This ensures that the strong adhesive sticks to the paper adhesive tape and not directly to the sensitive surface.
Different surfaces, base materials, adhesives and their adhesive strength
Double-sided adhesive tape and its adhesive should always be selected to suit the substrate, the desired application (e.g. fixing and mounting or "just" masking) and the factors to which it will be exposed: On sensitive surfaces (untreated wood, plaster, marble, etc.), the adhesive must not be aggressive and should be easy to remove. If you are planning a durable fastening, however, the adhesive tape should have high adhesive strength. Unfortunately, these two requirements are often contradictory. Last but not least, you should ensure that the tape is resistant to water, weather influences (UV radiation) and particularly high or low temperatures.
The backing material is also crucial: Thin backings, such as foil, enable easy lamination and precise splicing. Transparent foil even allows for "invisible" fastening. These adhesive tapes can be used for decorative work or crafting. Fabric carriers are particularly adaptable to different shapes and enable good adhesion, even on moulded surfaces. Fleece or foam carriers can also dampen vibrations and compensate for unevenness.
Tip for fastening, crafting or laying
High initial adhesive strength guarantees strong bonding, while lower initial adhesion means that the adhesive tapes can be repositioned for corrective bonding. Special high-strength adhesives, such as the GT 705 double-sided adhesive tape, adhere very strongly at first and increase their final adhesive strength over time – removal without residue is not possible, or only possible for a short time.
