Adhesive tape is a general term for adhesive, strip-shaped carrier materials that often consist of plastic foli. In the event industry, adhesive tape is used for various repair and fixing jobs.
For the ideal area of application, there are different types of adhesive tapethat have different properties and are made of different materials.
The plastic foli consists of PVC (polyvinyl chloride) or PP (polypropylene).
Adhesive cloth tape is an especially strong adhesive tape for heavy-duty use. It is the most commonly used adhesive tape in event technology because it can withstand many stresses. The fabric is particularly tear-resistant and has a very strong adhesive force. The adhesive tape is reinforced by a polyester fabric. The fabric structure makes it very adhesive lengthwise, but it can be easily torn off crosswise. The adhesive tape is also known as duct tape, and in the event industry especially as gaffa tape. It adheres well to its surface and, depending on the type of tape, can be removed without leaving any residue.
In most cases, the adhesive cloth tape is waterproof and is suitable for sealing and repairing as well as for marking.
Adhesive tapes made of polypropylene are usually coated with an acrylate dispersion that serves as an adhesive. The advantage of the adhesive is that it is resistant to ageing and light. This adhesive tape has a particularly high adhesive strength and good adhesion. This type of adhesive tape with acrylate adhesive unrolls quietly, but on the other hand it is difficult to process and cannot withstand large temperature fluctuations.
An alternative to acrylate adhesive is hot-melt adhesive or synthetic rubber. This adhesive has a pleasant adhesive quality and an amazing long-term adhesive strength, although it is easy to unroll. The adhesive tape is particularly suitable for machine sealing of cartons.
On the other hand, it should be noted that the tape makes a loud noise when it is pulled off and does not have a high temperature resistance. In addition, the physical properties of the material are not stable.
A third variant is natural rubber adhesive, which is used for the PP adhesive tape. The adhesive is environmentally neutral and produces hardly any vapours. Adhesive tapes with this adhesive have good adhesion on difficult surfaces and are easy to remove. The material adheres very quickly, is temperature-resistant and resistant to deformation.
PVC consists largely of chlorine. By adding various materials, PVC becomes a light- and weather-resistant material.
In its original state, PVC is a brittle material, but with the addition of plasticisers and stabilisers, it becomes a soft, mouldable and technically suitable consumable.
The most important properties of PVC are as follows: the material is resilient and tear-resistant. It is also heat-resistant, non-ageing, UV-stable, adheres to a wide variety of surfaces, is insensitive to moisture, universally applicable and has a quiet roll dispenser.
