Stage fabrics – fabrics with low flammability according to DIN 4102
Stage fabrics and theatre fabrics are often used for decoration at trade fairs or events, for stage technology and for curtains and backdrops in theatres. For safety at public events, these fabrics should be certified according to DIN 4102 B1, for example. In addition to molton, you can now purchase other stage fabrics here . New since 2017: Nessel, a flame-retardant cotton fabric, which in its popular 200 g/m² quality is a frequently used accessory in theatre and stage supplies.
What distinguishes special stage and theatre fabrics?
Stage fabrics have to meet special requirements. Fabrics for curtains, backdrops, decoration and technology must becertified as flame retardant when used in theatres or for public events so that the products comply with the strict fire safety regulations for built-in accessories.
How can you recognise such products?
The fabrics are tested for flammability and certified according to applicable standards. The older, still valid DIN 4102 standard provides proof that the product is flame-retardant by means of a B1 certificate . According to a European standard, the fire protection classification system forbuilding materials ( ) DIN EN 13501, construction productsare also classified according to their fire behaviour. In addition, there is DIN EN 13773, a classification scheme that classifies special textiles for curtains and drapes ( ) according to their burning behaviour.
Important to know: Flame-retardant stage fabrics B1 are available in different qualities. Depending on the fabric, a distinction is made in the event sector and stage requirements between:
- permanently flame-retardant fabrics (e.g. thread curtains, CS sprinkler fabric, CS molton),
- textiles and fabrics that have been impregnated with flame retardants after manufacture (, e.g. decorative and stage molton, nettle)
Impregnated stage fabrics are not washable or must be re-treated with flame retardants after washing. Mechanical influences, long storage times and moisture in the warehouse can have a negative effect on the flame retardancy of stage curtains or backdrops.

Tussah – stage fabric made from bleached cotton
Tussah is an inexpensive stage fabric that looks like linen. The flame-retardant, matt fabric made of bleached cotton is woven in a plain weave and is available online in a 200 g/m² version ( ) that is opaque and translucent. The robust, tear-resistant nettle fabric is popular for decoration in stage design and at events, and is also frequently used for technical applications, such as
- lighting installations
- stage horizons and panoramas
- Shirtings and coverings of all kinds (e.g. for projections)
- as veils, screens (can be individually painted or printed) and much more
- as a photo backdrop in the studio
Nettle is a fabric that you can also order from us in other weights. Our standard range offers you the so-called shirting fabric, which we keep in stock ready for dispatch. Furthermore, for use in the theatre or for decoration, two further qualities can be compared:
- Voile nettle approx. 90 g/m²
- Shirting / standard nettle approx. 200 g/m² (available in our online shop)
- Nettle with approx. 400 g/m² / horizontal weave
Voile muslin with approx. 90 g/m² is a light and transparent B1 fabric which, as its name suggests, is often used as a veil (projection veil or portal veil, similar to tulle or mesh). This fabric can be used to create wonderful effects with light. Shirting fabric, also known as standard muslin, is one of the standard stage fabrics at approx. 200 g/m². As described above, this flame-retardant fabric is very versatile in its use. A heavy, light- and opaque nettle fabric weighing around 400 g/m², on the other hand, is extremely tear-resistant, as the fabric is often produced in a Panama weave. On theatre stages, this highly durable nettle fabric is often used as a robust horizon fabric for backdrops, stage backgrounds or individually designed as a screen.
Molton: the classic fabric for backdrops and curtains
Decorative molton and stage molton are among the most popular flame-retardant B1 fabrics for stage use. The roughened, matt stage fabric does not reflect light and impresses with its diverse technical properties. A stage molton weighing around 300 g/m² is opaque and light-proof; in black, a molton of this quality is light-proof. The stage fabric also improves the sound at events and reduces echo and noise, which is why molton is often used to make acoustic curtains. The lightweight version of the fabric, decorative molton with approx. 160 g/m², is more affordable. The fabric, which is equally matt and often coloured, is suitable for versatile decoration on stages and at events. The flame-retardant fabric is also very popular for trade fair and shop construction or as a photo background in studios.
We stock stage molton / decorative molton in 300 cm widths as rolls (30 m and 60 m bales) or by the metre in cut lengths. The fabric can be customised for you as required. Please use the molton configurator or ask our team for a non-binding quote.
Greenbox and Bluebox for studio use
Whether in the studio as a background fabric for film shoots or as a photo background, molton fabrics in greenbox or bluescreen colours ( ) are ideal for chroma keying (post-production technique). The flame-retardant fabrics have the right colour tone and a matt, slightly fluffy surface (roughened). The fabric reduces reflection and enables professional shots that provide an optimal basis for the cropping process.
B1 fabrics are available in bales, cut to size by the metre or custom-made.
We stock molton and nettle in bales, depending on which products you choose, in lengths of 30 running metres and 60 running metres, in large quantities – this guarantees fast shipping. Decorative and stage molton is also available by the metre in customised cuts.
