While some fences are primarily used to enclose an area, others also serve as safety barriers. Different safety barriers are required depending on whether the fences are used as visual barriers or need to withstand high pressure from people.

Which safety barrier for which type of barrier?

For (large) events, the use of safety barriers and barricades is regulated by law in almost all federal states, usually in the Assembly Venue Ordinance (VStättVO) or in the MVStättVO. Here you will find an overview of the VStättVOs of the individual federal states.

There are various regulations for construction sites, including the Construction Site Ordinance (BaustellV), rules on occupational safety on construction sites (RAB) and the Occupational Safety and Health Act.

The individual VStättVOs do not specify the respective types of safety barriers and their use, but the following use is common in the event industry:

Mannesmann barriers - for barriers without pressure from people

Mannesmann barriers are classic safety barriers for simple demarcations without pressure from people. The barriers – also known as crowd control barriers, Mannheim barriers, Luxembourg barriers or Monrovia barriers – are suitable for use as route barriers (e.g. at sporting events, carnival parades), for visitor guidance at entrances and in ticket office areas, and for partitioning large event areas.

Mannesmann barriers are particularly easy to use. The barriers can be connected to form rows of any length using eyelets and hooks, stand without additional accessories and are easy to assemble and dismantle.

Mannesmann barriers can be fitted with matching banners or covers, which are also available in our range and can be custom printed.

Police grids – increased stability thanks to tread surface

Police grids are safety barriers for barriers with low pressure from people. Police grids are very similar to Mannesmann barriers at first glance, but differ in detail. The grids – also known as hamburger grids or hamburger riders – have vertical and horizontal struts. In addition, the grids have a tread surface on one side and support struts on the other. This results in increased stability. Depending on the design, police grids are rigid or foldable.

Police grids can also be connected to each other using hooks and eyelets. They are frequently used to cordon off sales and service areas, entrance areas and to demarcate aisles at events (safety lines) and visitor areas at receptions, parades, etc.

Construction fences for enclosure and barrier

Construction fences – also known as mobile construction fences or Heras fences – are mostly used to enclose construction sites and event venues. The fences can be connected to form rows of any length using plastic or concrete feet and, with a height of around 3 m , protect against unauthorised access to the site.

Construction fences with construction fence rolls (also available in our shop) serve as access gates to the site or as emergency exits.

Covered with view protection nets or tarpaulins, construction fences also serve as wind and privacy protection. With individually printed banners, mobile construction fences can also be used as advertising media and signposts.

For barriers with high pedestrian traffic: stage barricades

For areas with high pedestrian pressure, such as crowd control, stage barriers and separation of standing areas at concerts, police barriers and Mannesmann barriers would be too unstable. In these cases, particularly stable barriers – stage barriers – are used.
