Guidance cord - PP cord for efficient calibration
A guidance cord is a robust cord used to align a straight line. The guidance cord is mainly used outdoors on construction sites and in the event sector. T ear-resistant and robust polypropylene has proven to be a suitable material for this purpose. The guidance cord is used especially in the event sector to measure escape routes, visitor paths, the position of stages, delay towers and FOH towers, as well as the rows of chairs in a straight line according to the standard dimensions of the site and seating plan.

The classic measuring cord is black, but it is also available in white and bright colours, making it ideal for dark backgrounds. When choosing a guidance cord, it is also important to note that the longer the span, the greater the tensile strength of the cord should be.
Mason's cord and guidance cord explained simply
Guidance cords are used for manual work in a wide variety of areas, from the construction industry to horticulture and the event industry. However, in the construction industry, the synonym "mason's cord" is mainly used for the word guidance cord. The term mason's cord originally refers to its use as a measuring cord for masons. The mason uses the cord to align horizontally or vertically in order to build a straight brick wall. Aligning means drawing a precise line using a taut cord. This is also where the common name "guidance cord" comes from.
Using a guidance cord as a measuring cord
During the construction of open-air concerts or open-air theatre performances, a guidance cord is used to implement the entire site plan and seating plans accurately. For this purpose, the string frame, consisting of wooden pegs to which the guidance cord is attached and stretched, is set up. Alternatively, the measuring cord is fixed to the floor with adhesive tape. The straight line can be used to measure the entire event site: from the enclosure with construction fences and long rows of crash barriers to the position of the stage, FOH tower, delay tower, etc.
How is a guidance cord stretched? - Instructions
Whether horizontal or vertical: only a tightly stretched guide cord is useful as a guideline for numerous tasks. A guide cord can be stretched correctly in just a few simple steps:
- First, determine the course of the line by sticking wooden pegs or metal pins into the ground as the starting and end points.
- The guidance cord is then attached to the pegs.
- The cord is then stretched taut. The polypropylene guidance cord can be stretched tightly as the plastic fibres are extremely tear-resistant, highly resilient and very robust.
If necessary, the guidance cord can also be aligned using a spirit level.
Our tip: A guidance cord that is too long may sag slightly. In this case, intermediate pegs or pins should be used. To tension the guidance cord vertically, attach a suitable weight (plumb bob) to the lower end of the cord.
