First aid kit expired – what to do?
As a general rule, medical supplies in a car first aid kit have a maximum shelf life of five years. You should therefore check all items regularly to ensure they are in good condition and have not passed their expiry date. For example, disposable gloves can crack due to temperature fluctuations in the car, gauze bandages can lose their elasticity over time and plasters may no longer stick properly.
In order to be able to provide the right wound care as a first responder at the scene of an accident, products that have passed their expiry date must be replaced immediately.
If you currently have a first aid kit that complies with the old standard in your car, you may continue to use it until its expiry date, but you must replenish it with items that comply with the new standard 13164.
