Lashing straps: safety beyond transport
Lashing straps have proven themselves for securing all kinds of loads: whether for securing loads during transport or for lashing and securing in warehouses and at events. High-quality lashing belts can be used universally. Depending on the desired application, you can choose a single strap with a simple clamping lock or with a ratchet, or a two-piece strap with a ratchet and hook. Lashing straps in a striking colour such as yellow or orange are mainly used for securing loads during transport, while a lashing strap in black is popular wherever the fastening should be inconspicuous.
Lashing belts: Make your selection
You can purchase lashing straps from allbuyone in the following designs:
- 1-piece with clamp lock
- 1-piece with ratchet
- 2-piece with ratchet and hook
Select the right lashing strap for your purpose with ratchet or clamping lock. You will also find a large selection in terms of the length and width of the lashing belts and the permissible tensile force:
- Colours: black, blue, yellow, orange
- Length: from 3.50 m to 6 m
- Width: from 25 mm to 50 mm
- Tensile force: from 500 daN to 5000 daN
daN is the abbreviation for Deka-Newton, a unit used to indicate the load-bearing capacity or breaking strength of ropes or straps. One daN corresponds approximately to the weight force acting on a mass of 1 kg.
Clamp lock or ratchet?
Lashing belts with clamping locks are lashed by hand. A deflection bar and a ribbed clamping jaw ensure that the tension is maintained. Ratchets on the lashing belt generate more clamping force during lashing. Simple ratchets offer a tension force of up to 500 daN, high-quality ratchets made of stainless steel even up to 5000 daN.
Lashing belt with hooks
Depending on the application, lashing straps with hooks are useful. The end fitting is secured with a special safety seam. A lashing belt with hooks consists of two parts: a short strap with hooks and a ratchet and a long strap with hooks. This has a significant advantage: the lashing belt does not have to be wrapped around the goods to be secured. Instead, the hooks can be attached directly to pallets, lashing rails, lashing chains or lashing eyes.
All lashing belts are made of UV-resistant, hard-wearing polyester of the highest quality. The colour of the lashing strap does not provide any information about the material or load capacity.
Label meaning – simply explained
Depending on the area of application, the design of a lashing strap is tested according to various standards. DIN EN 12195-2 stipulates that every lashing strap must have a rectangular, permanently affixed label.
According to DIN EN 12195-2, the following information must be included:
- Maximum tensile force (LC) (in daN)
- Normal hand force SHF (= approx. 50 daN)
- Normal tension force STF (in daN)
- Material of the lashing strap
- Lashing strap length (in m)
- Date of manufacture (month/year)
- Manufacturer with traceability code
- GS mark and testing agency (optional)
- Note: "Must not be used for lifting!"
- Permissible tensile force with symbols for 1-piece or 2-piece lashing belts (direct and strapping)
- Elongation at maximum permissible tensile force (in %)
The colour of the test label provides information about the material. Blue stands for polyester, brown for polypropylene, green for polyamide and white for other materials. The colour of the lashing strap, on the other hand, has no meaning!
Lashing straps as transport safety devices
Lashing belts in a striking colour ensure safe transport. Yellow, orange and blue stand out clearly from the transported goods. This makes it immediately apparent whether the lashing strap is still tight and secure: a plus for safety. Anti-slip mats are also very useful. They give each individual item more grip during transport and provide even more security when lashing with a lashing strap.
When securing loads on vehicles, the Road Traffic Regulations (StVO) § 22 Loads apply:
"The load, including load securing devices and loading equipment, must be stowed and secured in such a way that even in the event of emergency braking or sudden evasive manoeuvres, it cannot slip, fall over, roll back and forth, fall off or cause avoidable noise. The recognised rules of technology must be observed."
Lashing straps in the stage area
The black lashing belt is mainly used in theatres and on stages. Black lashing belts are popular when fastening needs to be secure but inconspicuous. The lashing belt holds everything in place during your event, whether you are securing trusses, boxes or other structures. The black lashing belt with black ratchet is particularly discreet. This means that only what is supposed to be seen shines on stage.
Lashing straps are not a substitute for round slings: according to the test label, lifting loads with a lashing belt is not permitted.
How long do lashing straps last?
Customers often ask: How old can lashing straps be and how long do they last? As a general rule, lashing straps do not have a fixed expiry date. Lashing belts must be checked regularly and before each use for damage. If there are any defects, these will determine whether the lashing belt needs to be discarded (end of service life). Defects in the webbing can include, for example, cuts of more than 10% on the woven edge or damage to the seams. Deformations and breaks are grounds for discarding ratchets and hooks, for example. Lashing belts with missing or illegible test plates must also no longer be used.
Edge protection provides additional safety. Edge protection ensures that the webbing does not rub against sharp-edged goods.
