Soft PVC backing material: adhesive tapes in various PVC qualities
Not all PVC adhesive tapes are the same. Sometimes the carrier material of the tapes is particularly soft, supple and adaptable, such as insulating tape or dance floor tape. However, there are also harder, tougher and particularly tear-resistant PVC adhesive tapes that feel more like a foil – such as packaging tape for packing cardboard boxes and other transport goods. But what are the differences between the materials?
What is PVC and what does the abbreviation stand for?
PVC is the abbreviation for polyvinyl chloride, often referred to in short as vinyl. The base material is actually comparable to the properties of a vinyl record. The good old vinyl disc is hard and durable, as well as resistant to a wide range of influences.
It is only through the addition of stabilisers, plasticisers and other additives that the inherently hard material PVC becomes supple, soft, malleable and suitable for technical applications such as adhesive tape.
Polyvinyl chloride is divided into hard PVC (PVC-U) and soft PVC (PVC-P), where U stands for unplasticised and P for plasticised. PVC adhesive tape is therefore particularly durable, while soft PVC is highly adaptable, making PVC adhesive tapes flexible and stretchable.
Modification of PVC – properties of the tapes
PVC is extremely abrasion-resistant and durable. PVC adhesive tapes are resistant to acids, alkalis, petrol and oil. In addition, the tapes are low-conductive and almost waterproof. However, special applications often require other properties. By adding stabilisers and other additives – both to the base material itself and to the adhesive coating – PVC adhesive tapes are technically modified to fulfil specific properties. There are...
- Cold- or heat-resistant adhesive tapes.
- Tapes that can withstand large electrical voltage differences (insulating tapes).
- Water-resistant and weather-resistant PVC tapes.
- UV-resistant adhesive tapes.
- Particularly suitable for electrical installations and event requirements: flame-retardant PVC adhesive tapes.
The adhesive tapes and their adhesives can also be modified in terms of tensile strength, breaking load and peel strength.
Adhesives and adhesive properties: from extra strong to low tack
Whether resin, rubber, silicone or acrylate, water-based or solvent-based – the adhesive coating is unique to each PVC tape.
The adhesive strength of a tape basically depends on two factors: the properties of the adhesive itself and the surface to be bonded. Rough, irregular and dirty surfaces are more difficult to cover than smooth surfaces such as glass.
The adhesive itself also offers different properties in terms of adhesive performance. These are differentiated as follows:
- Initial adhesion (immediate adhesion/tack)
- Final adhesive strength
If, for example, the PVC tape needs to be removable without leaving any residue over a long period of time, you should choose a tape with a rather tough adhesive and low final adhesive strength. A prime example of an easily removable PVC tape is AT 211 – a tape that can even be used several times thanks to its pressure-sensitive adhesive.
Tip: To avoid adhesive damage, always choose the right adhesive for the surface to be bonded. For bonding cables, technical equipment and similar items, we recommend a PVC tape with a non-corrosive adhesive. For example, the AT 7 or AT 200.
Length and width of PVC adhesive tape
Our standard range includes narrow and wide tapes, from 15 mm to 100 mm. The length also varies between 10 m and 50 m. If you are looking for a specific size, we will be happy to take your personal order.
