Duct tape, Duck Tape or perhaps duct tape after all?
Many people around the world use several rolls of cloth tape every day – but no one knows the truth about what adhesive tape was originally called. Neither do we :-) In English-speaking countries, you often hear duct tape – or duck, gaffa and gaffer tape. In the German armed forces, however, the term Panzertape / Panzerband is very common. Supposedly because the cloth tape is as strong as a tank.
One thing is certain: duct is English. If you look it up in the dictionary, "duct" means pipe, conduit or shaft. Duct tape was used during the war to seal ammunition boxes, and after the war it became a tool for almost everything. It was used for repairs and fastening, but mainly for patching up broken pipes and tubes.
The word "duck" sounds quite similar. If you look it up in the dictionary, "duck" or "duckling" means a duck or a duckling. Another entry states that "duck" can also be a term for a canvas made of water-repellent fabric. This suggests that Duck Tape got its name because it can be used to seal things waterproof. And the comparison to water-repellent duck feathers is not so far-fetched.
