Stage molton, flame retardant

Stage molton B1 is flame retardant. The fabric is treated with fire protection impregnation during production to make it flame retardant and thus complies with fire class B1 according to DIN 4102, classification C-s1, d0 according to the Europe-wide DIN EN 13501-1 and EN 13773 (fire behaviour of textiles).

Stage molton in various colours

We offer this versatile theatre and stage fabric in a range of 11 colours. The most popular colours include black and white. Good to know: For a minimum order value of 500 running metres, can produce special colours according to RAL or Pantone. You can also specify an individual grammage of 120 g to 900 g/m² for the fabric.

What is stage molton?

Stage molton is a flame-retardant molton fabric made from 100% cotton and has a fabric weight of around 300 g/m². The width of the molton bales is usually between 200 cm and 300 cm per running metre. Molton for stages is a particularly densely woven fabric with a twill weave, whose surface is roughened on both sides in a separate process during manufacture, giving the fabric a soft feel and a matt appearance. Stage molton is therefore not only particularly hard-wearing and virtually tear-proof, but asa technical fabric, the combination of a roughened surface and fabric weight offers outstanding properties that make it particularly suitable as a stage fabric. Stage molton is often used by lighting technicians as a matt, non-reflective fabric for backdrops or curtains on stages or as a background in film and photo studios . Here, stage molton is used as a greenscreen or bluescreen for the chromakey process. As a sound-absorbing fabric, it is highly valued by sound engineers. The heavy molton fabric improves the acoustics in the room, absorbs background noise and is therefore also used as wall covering in home cinemas and rehearsal rooms.

Stage molton properties

Stage molton not only creates a stylish atmosphere, but thanks to its weight, density and roughened surface, the fabric also has a very high absorption rate for light, sound and cold. Its outstanding technical properties make molton fabrics the standard on stages and in theatres. Stage molton is regularly used in lighting and sound engineering, in film and photo studios and in the catering industry.

Stage molton is opaque and impervious to light

Unlike decorative molton, stage molton is not only heavy but also has a particularly dense weave. Stage molton is therefore opaque and light-proof. Black stage molton is almost light-proof. As a rule of thumb, the darker the colour, the more opaque the fabric. Are you looking for a blackout fabric? Weights from 280 g/sqm are suitable for this purpose. Stage molton has a matt, light-absorbing and non-reflective surface.

During production, the surface of the stage molton is roughened on both sides in a complex process. The resulting fabric is not only soft to the touch, but also completely matt in appearance and able to absorb light. When used as a backdrop on brightly lit stages or as a background in photo or film studios (greenscreen, bluescreen), molton is highly valued for its non-reflective properties. Molton fabrics guarantee reflection-free shots.

Stage molton improves acoustics and has a sound-insulating and sound-absorbing effect.

The combination of high weight per unit area and rough surface also comes into play here. Stage molton is a fabric that improves the overall acoustics in a room by acting as a sound insulator (molton prevents sound propagation) and sound absorber (molton is "sound-absorbing"). Musicians should know that molton is highly valued for its "clean acoustics" but has little effect on bass. In professional circles, molton is therefore classified as a "porous absorber" acoustic fabric.

As a rule of thumb for the use of sound-absorbing molton curtains or coverings, the more fabric used, the greater the absorption area of the stage molton. The highest absorption levels can be achieved through tailoring, such as lavish draping.

Stage molton sound insulation: How much sound does a molton curtain absorb?

It is often not possible to take structural measures, in which case a stage molton curtain is often enough to improve the acoustics. The following table (by Björn C. Herrmann / University of Duisburg) shows the difference between stage molton curtains and other materials:

Stage molton is a hard-wearing fabric

Stage molton has a dense, hard-wearing fabric and offers high tear resistance and durability. The molton fabric is of course suitable for reuse, but should be stored clean and dry. Moisture and high mechanical stress have a negative effect on the flame-retardant finish.

Pro tip for best storage: Molton fabrics are not crease-resistant, so we recommend storing stage molton on rolls until the next use.

Stage molton for thermal insulation

Is it draughty and cold? Stage molton has insulating properties, which is why this molton fabric is ideal for sewing particularly heavy curtains, for example to protect against draughts in the entrance area of a restaurant. For protection against the cold, stage molton curtains are usually double-stitched and can be combined with leather or wool fabric.

Difference between stage molton and decorative molton

Compared to stage molton, decorative molton is a relatively lightweight stage fabric. The decorative fabric B1 is also flame-retardant and available from stock in a width of 300 cm. Like stage molton, it can be customised to your requirements. Decorative molton is not opaque. This molton is translucent. The B1 fabric is therefore ideal for installing light objects. Decorative molton is often used as a decorative fabric at trade fairs, in theatres and in the event sector for building scenery, for skirting, as inexpensive ceiling suspension or wall covering and generally for decorating (e.g. for backlighting).

• Holdon clips: With the molton clips with patented locking system, you can hang the stage molton wherever you want. The heavy weight of the 300 g/m² fabric is no problem for the molton clips.
• Bungee cords: Bungee cords are ideal for attaching stage molton with eyelets to poles, tripods or trusses.
• Fleece tape: A stage molton cut-to-size piece can be mounted with self-adhesive velcro tape.
• Adhesive textile tape black: For attaching decorative molton and covering stains on molton fabrics. The adhesive tape can be used to repair small tears in the molton.

Can stage molton be washed or cleaned?

Stage molton is generally washable and the fabric can also be dry cleaned without any problems. Like other cotton fabrics, stage molton can shrink by up to 15% if washed at too high a temperature.

However, it is important to note that stage molton loses its flame retardancy when washed or cleaned.

Ironing and drying stage molton

To maintain the flame retardancy of molton fabrics, do not iron or tumble dry them. Detailed care instructions can be found in the Molton Care information sheet.

Renewing the fire protection of molton fabric

It is particularly important to note the following at events and public gatherings: Mechanical influences, long-term storage of molton, moisture and general cleaning, washing and ironing impair the flame retardancy of stage molton. To ensure that molton retains its flame retardancy even after prolonged use, the stage fabric can be re-impregnated with the appropriate flame retardant. The product of choice for this is Bioretard.
