Difference between fluorescent and phosphorescent – do all tapes glow under UV light?
The difference between fluorescent and phosphorescent is easy to explain: when phosphorescent and fluorescent products are irradiated with light (visible or UV light), they are physically excited to an "excited state" (= luminescence or "optical radiation").
Both products have the ability to "freeze" this state for a period of time. Fluorescent products lose this ability within a millionth of a second, but phosphorescent products can maintain the glow for hours.
In short:
- phosphorescence: the product (e.g. adhesive tape or rescue signs) continues to glow in the dark for some time (minutes to hours depending on the quality of the product)
- Fluorescence: as soon as the light (daylight, UV light, black light) is switched off, the glow disappears within a fraction of a second. Therefore, the product does not glow optically.
