Buy molton: decorative molton and stage molton in many colours
Molton is a flame-retardant , 100% cotton stage fabric with a 100% cotton lining ( ) that is roughened on both sides during production ( ). This gives it a fluffy, soft, matt surface with special properties. Stage molton and decorative molton absorb light and sound.
Stage molton 300g is used in theatres and on stages as well as in event technology as a technical fabric. This densely woven molton is completely opaque. Black molton in this weight is almost light-proof. The flame-retardant fabric is ideal, for example, as a black backdrop, as an opaque and light-proof curtain for stages and for darkening.
The more affordable molton fabric is lighter and not as densely woven. Decorative molton is translucent with a weight of 160g . This stage fabric is particularly popular in theatres for decorative scenery or in the event sector as a flame-retardant decorative fabric: For decorative purposes, such as covering tables and platforms (skirting), or for covering stage elements, for decorating and designing rooms and venues, for example as ceiling or wall coverings, or backlit. This molton fabric can of course also be used to make inexpensive stage curtains. However, this fabric is not completely opaque and absorbs less sound than stage molton due to its lower weight.

Decorative molton and stage molton: flame retardant B1 (DIN 4102)
Important for events, trade fair construction and theatres: decorative and stage molton are flame retardant (impregnated). The molton is B1 certified according to DIN 4102 and classified according to DIN EN 13501-1 C-s1, d0. This means that molton can be used as flame retardant at public events, on stages in theatres and in the event sector. The corresponding certificates/classification reports are available from allbuyone in a bilingual version (German/English).

Overview of different molton fabrics
A general distinction is made between natural cotton fabric (also known as molleton, not flame retardant) and impregnated molton (flame-retardant stage fabrics in accordance with DIN 4102). Molton fabrics for the event industry are available in several designs.
By the way: Event molton from allbuyone is produced in Germany. This quality product is not only suitable as a stage fabric, but also serves as a professional backdrop in film and photo studios.
decorative molton
The lightweight version of the double-roughened fabric (approx. 160 g/m²) is primarily used as a flame-retardant decorative fabric. This molton is woven in a plain weave and is neither light-tight nor opaque. Decorative molton is easy to work with and is available in 11 colours for colourful decorations.
stage molton
This flame-retardant fabric is woven in a dense twill weave and is also roughened on both sides. Its high weight of approx. 300g also makes it suitable as a technical fabric for event technology. Stage molton absorbs lighting e ly and the fabric is opaque. Black molton is completely opaque. Molton has sound-absorbing properties that improve acoustics on stages and make it suitable for use as acoustic curtains. As a rule of thumb, the heavier the fabric and the higher the fabric consumption, the higher its sound-absorbing properties.
Satin molton
Satin molton (approx. 320 g) is only roughened on one side compared to stage molton and is manufactured using a special weaving technique (satin weave). A very fine yarn results in a smooth and shiny surface. However, the fabric offers similar properties to stage molton: satin molton is opaque and its roughened reverse side also absorbs light and sound. However, due to the roughening on one side, it offers less absorption than conventional stage molton. Satin molton is available on request.
Trevira CS
Since stage molton and decorative molton lose their flame retardancy when washed, the event industry often turns to Trevira CS. This is a permanently flame-retardant fabric that is opaque, but not always light-tight. This usually very stretchy "molton" consists of polyester fibres and weighs approx. 300 g as a stage fabric. The fabric has two shiny surfaces, but can also be ordered with one side roughened. In terms of absorption coefficient (sound and light), however, it is significantly inferior to stage molton and satin molton.
Table molton: Molton table cover for catering
Table molton is used in catering as a table mat. The fabric is usually made of 100% cotton, but it can also be waterproof and non-slip to suit the needs of the catering industry. In this case, the molton table saver is made of a rubberised polyester fabric.
At allbuyone, you can buy table molton that is double-sided with a soft foam material and has a weight of approx. 670 g/m².

Molton properties at a glance
Molton – the fabric used to make stages, theatres, backdrops and other venues. Why? Because the outstanding properties of molton fabric offer a whole host of advantages:
Molton is sound-absorbing
Molton is a fabric with the ability to absorb sound. This makes molton the ideal fabric for stage, trade fair and theatre applications. Its double-sided roughened surface is sound-absorbing. The heavier the weight, the greater the effect. Stage molton with 300g/m² to 500g/m² is often used to positively influence room acoustics and absorb background noise.
Molton fabric is light-absorbing
The cotton fabric is roughened on both sides, giving it a matt, non- e surface. This makes molton ideal for use as a photo backdrop. It does not reflect light.
Molton is also light-absorbing as a stage fabric and theatre fabric, which in turn has a positive effect on stage lighting. On brightly lit stages, no light is reflected back into the audience area.
Stage molton is opaque and light-impermeable
Theatre curtains or stage curtains made of molton not only absorb light and sound. Molton is also opaque. This is a prerequisite for curtains, coverings and the like. As a backdrop, black molton is opaque. This allows backstage areas to be illuminated without the audience seeing what is going on behind the scenes.

What is molton fabric made of? Applications of stage molton and decorative molton
The cotton fabric offers a wide range of uses on stages, in theatres and even in studios. Some typical applications:
Stage curtains made of molton
Stage curtains in theatres, opera houses, concert halls and many other venues are made of molton. Stage curtains are usually made of stage molton in red or black. Stage curtains made of molton are not only opaque and light-proof, they are also sound-absorbing and thus contribute to improving the acoustics.

Molton as stage backdrop
Black stage molton is a classic backdrop. The background fabric is mostly used on music stages. Please note that molton is not windproof and is therefore only suitable for use as a background fabric for open-air stages to a limited extent. The cotton fabric is also indispensable for theatre equipment. Black stage molton is opaque even when illuminated and thus perfectly shields backstage areas from unwanted glances.

Molton printed in high-resolution digital print?
Are plain backdrops too boring for you? A backdrop does not always have to be made of black molton. On request, we will be happy to provide you with a selection of printed stage fabrics: molton with print or individually printed banners, as well as PA mesh for mounting on stages. Let us advise you personally, we look forward to your call.
By the way: A combination of banners and molton can be attached using Velcro tape. The motifs are even interchangeable.
But be careful: particularly strict fire safety officers do not always like this! Under certain circumstances, the B1 certification may become invalid. As a rule of thumb, B1 on B1 is no longer B1. A distance of at least 1 metre must be maintained between two different flame-retardant materials.
Photo background made of molton fabric
A background made of molton fabric provides professional working conditions. Molton is ideal as a portrait background, preferably stage molton in black or white. The fabric has a matt surface, which guarantees you the best, reflection-free recording quality. If the background fabric does not need to be light-tight, it can also be made inexpensively from decorative molton. All molton colours are available for the background fabric.

Greenscreen as a studio background for film and TV productions
We offer stage molton in a special greenscreen colour. In the studio, this fabric background enables chroma key recordings. A greenscreen or bluebox fabric can be made to your specifications. The greenbox fabric can also be ordered by the metre or in whole bales and attached in the studio using hold-on clips or cloth tape.

Molton for darkening
The light-proof properties of stage molton make it ideal for covering and darkening. This fabric in black is therefore often used as a blackout fabric. Wall covering or ceiling suspension using molton not only enhances the appearance, but also darkens rooms. Performances that take place during the day, for example in tents, can be reliably protected from daylight by the stage fabric. Molton is also frequently used as a blackout curtain in home cinemas.
Molton in stadiums/arenas
Many metres of stage fabric are regularly used to cover unsold visitor seats or as a covering behind the stage.
B1 decorative molton for stage design and backdrop construction
Thanks to the wide range of colours available, decorative molton is ideal for trade fairs, shop window and stage decorations, as well as for backdrop construction. Although decorative molton is not so much a technical fabric, the lightweight material is extremely easy to work with.
Washing molton – care instructions
Molton can generally be washed, ironed and cleaned, but a few points should be noted. Molton is made of pure cotton and is therefore not permanently flame retardant. If you wash molton, the flame retardant impregnation is no longer effective! Long storage periods, moisture and heavy mechanical stress also counteract the impregnation.
Further information on cleaning molton can be found in the Molton Care information sheet.
Can the flame retardancy of molton be renewed?
To ensure that molton is once again flame retardant, you can impregnate the cotton stage fabric with flame retardants. The appropriate agent for molton is the flame retardant Bioretard. However, molton only complies with DIN 4102 when the fire protection impregnation is applied correctly.
