What Is Chalk Spray?
A can of spray chalk contains countless finely dissolved particles of water-soluble chalk, mixed with alcohol that evaporates quickly during spraying. When using chalk spray, the binder-free colour particles settle on the sprayed surface but do not form a permanent bond with the substrate (material). Mechanical removal of chalk spray often occurs naturally; rain and mechanical abrasion, such as from pedestrians or vehicles, ensure that the colour gradually disappears over time.
How Long Does Chalk Spray Last?
Chalk is ideal for short-term marking and labelling. However, the durability of the marker spray cannot be universally determined. The adhesion of the colour depends heavily on:
- Weather conditions
- The various substrates (materials) on which the spray is to adhere
Weather influence should always be considered when using chalk spray. Heavy water exposure from frequent rain may dissolve the colour after just a few days. During a heatwave, however, the chalk may adhere for several weeks. Chalk spray adheres to both smooth and porous surfaces. When using marker spray (on a large scale), its durability is also influenced by mechanical abrasion, the applied layer thickness, and pigment drift.
Removing Chalk Spray Early or Residual Chalk
Would you like to remove the chalk spray early and not wait for rain? No problem! Plenty of warm water will help you clean without residue. However, in some cases, issues may arise when removing chalk spray, particularly on brittle and porous surfaces (e.g., rough concrete, tree bark, asphalt).
This is not due to the solubility of the chalk itself but rather the difficulty in accessing chalk residues that have settled in deep structures (joints, grooves) of the substrates and have no drainage. For manual removal, you can use a stiff broom, sponge, or pressure washer; in other cases, sand or liquid detergent concentrate may help. Generally, darker colours such as black or red are often harder to remove than lighter ones.
For porous, absorbent surfaces, we recommend testing removability with water pressure beforehand on a small area.
Conclusion: Caution with structured, highly absorbent surfaces, lacquered substrates, and materials not resistant to alcohol! Chalk spray used on asphalt in high summer, when tar melting occurs, can penetrate deeply into the road surface. The fine-pored, crystalline surface of zebra crossings is also unsuitable and should not be sprayed with chalk spray. We also generally advise against using chalk spray on car paints.
General Safety Information for Chalk Spray

- Do not smoke
- Avoid contact with eyes and skin
- Only allow children to use chalk spray under supervision
- Do not inhale aerosol from the spray paint
- The container is pressurised and should not be forcibly opened during or after use
- Do not use chalk spray in direct sunlight or at temperatures above 50 °C
- Do not spray near flammable or glowing objects
Storage Instructions
Whether it’s varnish spray or chalk marker spray, it is advisable to store it in a dry place protected from direct sunlight. Additionally, there are regulatory requirements for the storage of pressurised gas containers (TRG 300).
What Are the Legal Regulations for Spray Chalk?

Disposing of Chalk Spray
Chalk spray cans that are not completely empty can be disposed of at a hazardous waste collection point (EAK No. 150104). Completely empty chalk spray cans can be recycled as conventional tinplate.
