Rescue signs for emergency exits and escape routes
Emergency exits, emergency escape routes, escape and rescue routes and various first aid facilities must be clearly marked and easily visible. This is done in accordance with standards using signs with rescue signs. In order to ensure safety even at large events, such as on a spacious open-air site, the dimensions of the escape route signage must be adjusted. In our shop, you can therefore purchase standard escape lights, firesafety signs and long-lasting plastic emergency exit signs , as well as rescue signs in large formats. The safety signs, which are visible from a distance, are printed on foils, flags and banners in any size.
The following products with rescue signs can be ordered in this shop category:
- Fence banners for emergency exits and other rescue signs (in accordance with DIN ISO 7010 and "older" standards with text)
- Small emergency exit banners for police grids, small safety barriers, etc.
- Rescue signs - flags: construction fence flags, container flags, hoist flags
- Photoluminescent rescue signs
- Rescue signs printed on Forex, Dibond or hollow chamber posters
- Emergency lights for escape routes
Good to know: We do NOT ONLY supply standard signage, but also customised rescue signs. The choice of material, size and print can be individually adapted to your specifications.
What are rescue signs?
Rescue signs, along with firesafety signs, prohibition signs, warning signs and mandatory signs, belong to the general category of safety signs. Rescue signs are marked in accordance with standards on green rescue signs, which display white pictograms (symbols) (signal green according to RAL 6032 / signal white according to RAL 9003 in accordance with EN ISO 7010). A sign with a rescue sign indicates:
- Rescue routes and escape routes
- Emergency exits or emergency exits
- Important rescue equipment and first aid facilities
Which regulations and rules apply to rescue signs?
The use and installation of safety signs and the graphic design of rescue signs are regulated in Germany by the regulations of the professional associations – the previously applicable marking rules can be found in particular in BGV A8 and DIN 4844.
An officially recognised collection of technical rules and guidelines (legal framework: Occupational Safety and Health Act) – the ASR (Technical Rules for Workplaces) – has regulated the labelling requirements for rescue signs since 2012 . Here you will also find further rules relating to escape and rescue routes . The following are applicable:
- ASR A1.3 "Safety and health signage"
- with the currently valid standard DIN EN ISO 7010
- and ASR A2.3 "Escape routes , emergency exits, escape and rescue plan"
Does signage in accordance with DIN 4844 need to be replaced? No! Rescue signs that comply with the "old" standard are grandfathered. This means that if you already have extensive signage that complies with this standard, you can continue to purchase comparable products. However, combining "new" and "old" rescue signs or installing new signage that complies with the "old" standard is not recommended and could lead to insurance issues.
Further information:
- DIN 67510 / DIN 1838 / ASR A3.4/3 ( replacement for BGR 216) "Long-luminous pigments and products"/ "Lighting" "Safety lighting, optical safety guidance systems"
- According to DIN EN standard 13501 and DIN 4102-B1 (fire protection standard), the material used for signs in public indoor areas and workplaces should be flame-resistant.
- ISO 3864 and ASR V3a.2 "Graphical symbols - Safety colours and safety signs" and "Barrier-free design of workplaces", which regulate, among other things, the correct recognition distance for safety signs for visually impaired people.
Rescue signs at events:
In assembly areas , "safety signs must be permanently and clearly marked" (, VStättVO §6 (6)). Further information, e.g. on dimensions and positioning, as well as the lighting of escape and rescue routes and the marking of safety signs, can be found in the VstättVOs applicable to your federal state, also under §6, §7, §15.
What rescue signs are there?
The following rescue signs apply in accordance with DIN EN ISO 7010:

Emergency exit/escape route with direction arrow
Note Additional sign Direction arrow: The arrows (left, right, up and down) are known as additional signs. They may only be used in conjunction with a valid safety sign.
Directional information is mandatory for emergency exits, escape routes and rescue routes (E001 and E002)! Signs consisting of arrows alone are not permitted.
Affixing rescue signs
The installation of rescue signs is also regulated. ASR A1.3 (5, 6) stipulates that rescue signs must be clearly recognisable and permanently ly installed at a suitable height . This means, among other things:
- Stable against weather influences and adequately illuminated (artificial or natural).
- Clearly visible at a suitable height (movable or fixed).
How should rescue signs be affixed? A recommendation from the Munich Traffic Authority (Fire Department) states: "To ensure that signs located at a distance are clearly visible even to small people, emergency exit and other rescue signs should be mounted at a height of at least 2 metres above the floor. If necessary, it is recommended that emergency exit signs be displayed across the entire width (e.g. fence banners)."
Correct use of direction arrows in escape route signage
How are direction arrows used correctly on rescue signs? DIN SPEC 4844-4 is a technical report that issues recommendations for use. For example, on the installation of rescue signs or the ideal combination of rescue signs and directional information.
We have summarised the recommendations for directional information according to SPEC 4844 for you here.
